CHAMPS! Bulldogs win MW title

No. 67 Fresno State rallied to defeat Boise State 4-1 and clinch the outright 2022 MW regular season championship.
BOISE, Idaho – The No. 67-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team defeated the Boise State Broncos 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho.
Fresno State (19-3, 9-0 Mountain West) remained undefeated in conference play and secured the outright 2022 MW regular season championship with the victory.
The Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seed for next week's MW championships.
How It Happened: The 'Dogs bounced back in singles with four straight wins to conquer the Broncos after dropping doubles.
Pang Jittakoat and Matilde Magrini earned a win together to improved to 9-3 at No. 1 doubles this season (6-3 in MW play), but the 'Dogs came up just short in the other two doubles contests.
Fresno State's rally in singles started with a dominant win from Carolina Piferi in the No. 6 singles spot and Cristina Flaquer secured the clinching point after playing through three sets at No. 3 singles.Â

- This is Fresno State's third Mountain West championship in women's tennis and first since 2018. The first two (2014 & 2018) were tournament championships won when the Bulldogs were coached by Ryan Stotland, who is now the head coach at Arizona, where Denise Dy worked as Stotland's assistant coach from 2018-20 before being hired as Fresno State's head coach.
- For the ninth consecutive week, the Fresno State women's tennis team is ranked nationally (No. 67) in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings sponsored by Tennis-Point, the organization announced on Wednesday. This season, Fresno State has been ranked as high as No. 51 nationally.
- Fresno State's Pang Jittakoat improved to 17-3 in singles matches this season (15-3 at No. 1 singles) and owns an 11-match singles winning streak (all 11 in straight sets at the top position). Jittakoat is 7-0 in MW play at No. 1 singles.
- Fresno State's Cristina Flaquer improved to 14-5 in singles matches this season (9-4 at No. 3 singles).
- Fresno State's Carolina Piferi is now on a 13-match singles winning streak with a 15-1 record in singles (12-0 at No. 6 singles). Piferi is 7-0 in MW play in singles.
- Fresno State's Matilde Magrini improved to 10-7 at No. 2 singles this season.
- Both Jittakoat and Piferi are 8-0 in their last 10 singles appearances.
