Fresno State defeats Utah State 10-2 to tie the weekend series.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team defeated Utah State 10-2 in six innings of game two of the series at Margie Wright Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (10-28, 3-8 MW) snapped the Aggies' (21-16, 7-1 MW) unblemished conference record and will look for the series win tomorrow.
Â
Emery Nielson led the Bulldogs, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Alesia Denby, Mackenna Steele and Abby Doughty added two hits a piece. Six different Bulldogs drove in runs on Saturday.
Marley Hanlon threw a complete game, finishing with two strikeouts, while allowing two hits and no walks.
Â
How it happened
The first three and a half innings were scoreless before Fresno State went on to score four runs in the bottom of the third. The scoring was sparked by a single by Taryn Irigoyen, who would later score on a base hit by Doughty. The 'Dogs then brought in three runs on a plethora of Aggie errors and smart base running by the Bulldogs.
Â
Hanlon retired the batters in order to start the fourth and bring the Bulldog bats back up. Fresno State added one in the inning on an RBI single by Steele.
Â
Hanlon and the defense had another 1-2-3 inning while the Bulldog bats hung two additional runs in the fifth inning. A leadoff single by Nielson got things started at the plate. Bailey Williams and Avery Lawley recorded RBIs in the frame.
Â
Utah State scored their two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs kept the bats rolling and scored three runs on four hits and a sacrifice fly to complete the 10-2 run-rule victory against the Aggies.
Â
Up Next: Fresno State and Utah State will face off in the series finale tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT at Margie Wright Diamond.
