Morgan named Buster Posey finalist

WICHITA, Kan. - Fresno State redshirt junior catcher Zach Morgan has been named one of three finalists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced on Tuesday.
Ninety-seven catchers were named on the initial watch list that was cut down to 16 semifinalists on May 19 with Morgan being joined by Michael Carico of Davidson and Kevin Parada of Georgia Tech as finalists.

Morgan earned All-Mountain West first team honors while leading the team and rankied fifth in the MW hitting .381 from the dish. In addition, the Stockton native topped the club and ranked among the top 10 in the MW in hits (83), doubles (20) and on-base percentage (.454) and showed great discipline at the plate drawing 25 walks while only being struck out 17 times.
Behind the plate, Morgan started all 55 games for the 'Dogs with a .987 fielding percentage, tossed out 20 would-be base stealers and added 460 putouts, second-most in the MW behind only Tony Gwynn Player of the Year Sam Kulasingam (487) of Air Force.
After redshirting the 2019 season, Morgan saw action in 15 games in the COVID-19 shortened season in 2020 and played in 43 of the 'Dogs 45 games last season.
A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced on June 29 at the Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.
