FRESNO, Calif. – Redshirt junior catcher Zach Morgan catches up with GoBulldogs.com to preview the second day of the 2022 MLB Draft.Â
Q: When did you start playing baseball?Â
Morgan: I was two or three years old. My grandma and grandpa would toss me pitches and I would pick up a bat and swing it. Then that developed into me playing organized youth baseball.Â
Q: When did the recruiting process start for you?Â
Morgan: I received my first offer after my freshman year of high school. It was actually from Nevada so it has come full circle. It was an exciting time for me. I had a couple more offers my freshman and sophomore year and then I committed after my junior year.Â
Q: Why did you decide to commit to Fresno State?Â
Morgan: Immediately when I walked on the baseball field at Fresno State, I knew that's where I wanted to be. That combined with the rich baseball history show. I knew I wanted to come and play at a great baseball school, and that was where I wanted to go."Â
Q: You had a great year at the plate. You lead the team in most statistical categories. What changed for you?Â
Morgan: I think it was more preparation. I was confident in what I had done over the summer and over the fall with the team. I think that really contributed to how I was able to play this year.Â
Q: How have you been preparing for the draft?Â
Morgan: I've been staying in shape, lifting, throwing and hitting. I'm making sure that my body is ready and just staying mentally locked in and prepared.
Q: What's it like to see former Fresno State players have successful careers in the MLB?Â
Morgan: Yeah,it's pretty awesome and surreal. Where I am at is a stepping stone. All those guys have come through Fresno State and played a couple years here then ultimately their dreams became a reality. That's something that I want to happen for myself.Â
Q: Have you talked to any former teammates about this process and what to expect?Â
Morgan: Yeah, I reached out to Jamison Hill. He plays for the Diamondbacks now. I asked about his experiences, so he's had some good insight for me about what to expect. We'll see what happens once it happens.
Q: You're from Stockton so does that make you a Giants fan or an A's fan?Â
Morgan: I grew up a Giants fan. I went to watch a lot of Giants games.Â
Q: Does that play a factor in the draft? Or do you just want to hear your name called?Â
Morgan: It's the last thing on my mind. I just want to hear my name called, whatever team that is, I'll be more than happy to play for and lace them up that team.Â
Q: What will you miss most about playing at Fresno State?Â
Morgan: The friendships with my teammates, and those bonds that I've created. They are more like brothers than teammates. So I think those are memories I'll cherish. I'll be sad to leave those behind, but I think that those bonds will last forever.Â
