Smith earns spot in program's Top 20

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Led by a Top 20 performance in program history from sophomore Corie Smith, the Fresno State cross country teams were back in action this morning competing at the UCR Invitational at the UCR Ag Ops Course.
Running her first 6K with the Bulldogs following her return home to the Valley, Smith jumped to 17th on the school's all-time list with time of 21:47.5. During the last decade, only two other 'Dogs have posted a faster time in their first 6K at Fresno State.
Shaylee Grimm was the Bulldogs' No. 2 finisher for the second straight meet, coming in with a career-best time 22:32.0.
The top two for the men were unchanged as well from the season opening meet as Mohamed Saleh ran a 25:36.7 8K. He was followed by Sam Hawley at 26:02.1.
Quotes from Head Coach Jason Drake
On the meet…
"It was nice to start the season in earnest today. We had some good things but it shows us we have a lot of work to do. We will get back to work for another solid training block, and be better in two weeks, and more importantly in the month of October."
On the women…
"Corie Smith in her first true race as a Dog, had a solid opener. Shaylee (Grimm) and Victoria (Nino) were substantially faster than a year ago. The goal is always to beat last year's performance, so I was pleased with the way they ran. I think we were a little hesitant out there racing today, and the women should gain more confidence as the season progresses."
On the men…
"We had a rough day. Missing last year's number one Juanathan Reyes who was Top 20 here last year was unfortunate, as we are much better with him in the lineup. He continues to do well with his recovery from surgery last spring, and we hope to have him back soon."
"Mohamed (Saleh) has looked great in practice, but had an off day today, so we will regroup with him and get ready for our next race in two weeks. We lined up a few freshmen, and their first race moving up to 8K is hard. They will be much better a month from now."
