Robinette sets program record in season opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team fell 11-8 in its season opener against No. 3 Texas A&M on Friday afternoon at the Student Horse Center.

The Bulldogs earned a pair of Most Outstanding Performer honors in the meet as senior Ana Bertozzi earned her sixth career MOP honor in the flat, and sophomore Shelby Robinette picked up her first career MOP in the reining.

Robinette earned her reining MOP with a program record 79, besting Fresno State's prior reining high score of 76.5. Her score on Friday ties the third-highest score in NCEA history, and is the highest by any collegiate rider in the reining since TCU's Kolby Simonson in 2012.

How it Happened
The morning began with the horsemanship and fences events. Fresno State earned a 3-2 win in the fences behind points by Lizzie Stodden, Bertozzi and Taylor Holstead. Bertozzi and Holstead tied with the highest scoring ride by a Bulldog in the event, scoring 82 in their rides. Holstead had the largest margin of victory, outscoring her opponent 82-67.

The teams tied in the horsemanship 2-2 with a tie in a ride by Kendra Lee (73). Ella Storch and Alex Krebs earned their points for the 'Dogs. Lee scored the highest score in her tie, but Storch was close behind with a 72 in her first career ride. She defeated her opponent 72-69.5.

At the break, Fresno State had a 5-4 advantage over No. 3 Texas A&M.

The Bulldogs were outscored 7-3 in the second half with reining and flat, but the 'Dogs swept the MOPs in the half. Fresno State earned one point in the flat in a 90-82 MOP ride by Bertozzi. Fresno State's two points came by Robinette and Julianne Kelley in the reining. Robinette earned her first career MOP with a 79-75.5 ride, and Kelley picked up her point on a 72-71.5 edging.
