In the midweek pair of games, Fresno State (12-19) produced 24 hits (nine extra-base hits) and 15 runs while hitting .375 as a team with a .563 slugging percentage against Santa Clara (16-14).
The Bulldogs were paced at the plate by freshman catcher Kennedy Bunker's 5-for-6 day (.833 batting average and a 1.333 slugging percentage), which included three doubles, five RBIs, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 – Santa Clara 12, Fresno State 10 [8]
In the early game, Fresno State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first when Juliana Wilson launched her fifth home run in the last six games with this one being a two-run homer deep over the berm past the right field fence.
Santa Clara scored the next seven runs with six in the second and another in the fourth to put the Broncos in front, 8-2, midway through the fourth frame.
Later, with Fresno State trailing 10-4, the Bulldogs answered with five runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to force extra innings.
SCU then got two runs in the eighth, the first aided by the international tiebreaker rule as the teams were trying to race against projected rain later on Wednesday evening, and the Broncos held on for the two-run win.
Bunker delivered an impressive 4-for-4 offensive performance, which included three doubles, for the Bulldogs, who have won four of their last seven contests.
Game 2 – Fresno State 5, Santa Clara 4
After the Broncos took a 3-0 lead with one run in the second and two more in the third of the late game, Fresno State scored five of the next six runs, including the go-ahead sacrifice fly off the bat of Bunker, which scored Emma Martinez in the sixth for a 5-4 lead.
Keahilele Mattson had tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run double in the fourth.
Taylor Gilmore tossed 4.1 innings in relief of Shelbi Denman for Fresno State in the nightcap. Gilmore allowed no earned runs and just one hit to earn her fifth victory of the season with the strong outing in the circle.
Martinez went 2-for-4 at the plate and recorded a team-best two runs and four defensive assists in the game two victory for Fresno State.
