FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team dropped game three against No. 9 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Travis Welker led the 'Dogs with three hits in four at-bats and one RBI.
Starting pitcher Roman Angelo led on the mound as he racked up six strikeouts and only allowed one walk in 4.2 innings pitched.
Fresno State now sits at 15-11 on the season (7-4 Mountain West) and UCSB advances to 18-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Gauchos found themselves on the board first in the top of the second inning after an RBI double from Nick Oakley. The Bulldog defense held them to one run with a runner stranded on second at the end of the inning.
UC Santa Barbara followed up in the third by loading the bases and scoring one run on four consecutive hits. The Gauchos scored two more in the inning due to a fielding error at third base. Angelo wrapped up the top of the inning with a strikeout to get the 'Dogs back to the dish.
In the bottom of the third, Tyler Davis kicked off the inning with a walk and was eventually brought home by an RBI fielder's choice by Grady Morgan.
The Gauchos got their first out in the top of the fourth with one hopper hit straight back to Roman Angelo on the first pitch, who quickly turned the play at first. The next two outs came shortly after in the three up, three down inning.
Travis Welker's second hit of the game tallied another run for the 'Dogs in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 4-2 game in favor of the Gauchos.
UCSB scored an additional three runs in the top of the fifth off two home runs, the first of which was a solo shot and the second a two-run big fly.
Fresno State answered with a three-run inning, with one run from an RBI from Murf Gray and the others from two wild pitches.
Trevor Garcia took over on the mound for the sixth inning and with runners on the corners, the Gauchos were able to tack on another run after an RBI ground out from the UCSB third baseman, Zander Darby. After holding the 'Dogs scoreless in the bottom of the inning, the Gauchos scored another run on a home run in the top of the seventh.
The Gauchos locked in their 13-5 win by scoring four more runs in the top of the ninth from a solo and three-run homer.
