'Dogs see streak end at No. 3 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – The No. 9 Fresno State water polo team saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday, falling 15-7 to No. 3 UCLA on the road. The Bulldogs move to 14-8 overall, and 6-0 in Golden Coast Conference play.
The Bulldogs had five different goal scorers against the Bruins, and were led by freshman Hailey Andress who recorded her seventh hat trick of the season. Brooke Ochoa, Ella Simone, Jillian Schultz, and Kaitlin Howarth also added a score a piece.
In the cage, Paula Nieto Jasny recorded seven saves. Defensively, Schultz led the team with five drawn exclusions.
Cynthia Rosa stayed hot, winning all four sprints and bringing her season to a 56-3 mark.
How it Happened
No. 3 UCLA got out to an early 2-0 lead before Andress would score her first on the assist by Elisa Grim. It took only 14 seconds before the Bruins would respond and take that goal back. Andress scored her second goal on a 6-on-5 advantage, putting Fresno State back within two with 2:46 left in the opening period, 4-2. The Bruins tacked on three additional goals to close out the opening quarter with a 7-2 advantage.
UCLA scored one more before Simone scored to end the Bruins' run at the 5:38 mark of the second quarter. There was a defensive battle that saw UCLA outscoring Fresno State 2-1 for the rest of the quarter. Andress scored her third on a penalty shot with 34 seconds left before half. UCLA led 10-4 at the break.
UCLA opened the third quarter with five-straight goals, to extend the lead to 15-4 before Howarth scored on the assist by Andress to end the run with 59 seconds left in the period.
Fresno State would score the only two goals of the fourth quarter as Schultz and Ochoa worked the offense for the scores.
