FRESNO, Calif. – For the second straight outing, the Fresno State soccer team managed to outshoot its opponent but were unable to find a result, taking a 5-1 defeat to San Diego State in its Mountain West opener on Thursday night at Bulldog Soccer Stadium.
The Bulldogs held a 10-9 shot advantage but the Aztecs put seven on target with five finding the back of the net compared to the 'Dogs getting one goal in six shots on target.
HOW IT HAPPENED
San Diego State took control of the game early, taking a 2-0 lead just after 20 minutes had passed. The Aztecs scored twice in less than a minute, first through a back-post pass to Denise Castro. Less than a minute later, a quick counter attack led to a 1-v-1 for Emma Gaines-Ramos. The Bulldogs looked to cut the deficit in half, but none of their four shots in the final 25 minutes could find the mark.
Coming out of the break, Ciara Wilson and Kaya Scott ripped off a pair of shots on goal, but Alexa Madueno was there to stop both attempts.
Shortly after, Kali Trevithick added a third off a header in the 53rd minute. Wilson answered back for Fresno State in the 58th minute. Having her first attempt stopped, the sophomore poked in the rebound.
Trevithick, though, brought the Aztecs' lead back to three just four minutes later.
