FRESNO, Calif. -Â Leading at the half, Fresno State surrendered its advantage in the final half hour, falling 2-1 to Nevada on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Stadium. It was the first time this season that the Bulldogs have lost a match when leading after 45 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On the front foot early Fresno State found the game's opening goal in the 19th minute. Pressure in Nevada's defensive third led to a misplayed ball which Ciara Wilson pounced on. Two touches and Wilson found Kaelyn Miller open just inside the top of the 18. Miller one-timed the ball past an on-rushing Alyssa Szarlacki.
The Bulldogs looked to double their lead less than five minutes later but Szarlacki came up with a pair of stops for the Wolf Pack.Â
Nevada leveled the match with less than a half hour remaining. On a back-heel from the edge of the box Emily Rich tapped the ball back to Penny Murphy who struck a shot across the face of goal past Shivani Battaglia in full stretch.
Three minutes later, Rich got into a foot race from midfield before going low and inside the right post to give the Wolf Pack the lead.
After Nevada threatened to double its advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining, the Bulldogs saw their opportunity to equalize come on a counter. One-on-one with Szarlacki, Miller slipped past the Pack keeper but the ball pulled her away from the open net. The senior's shot from a tight angle was knocked away by a Nevada defender who got back to the goal line.Â
