FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team collected their first win at Bulldog Soccer Stadium this season on Thursday as the Bulldogs defeated Colorado State by a final score of 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colorado State applied pressure early in the contest, gathering the first scoring chance of the night off a corner kick that Shivani Battaglia kept out of the net. Fresno State responded with an opportunity of their own as Kayla Robinson came with speed up the right side before sending a shot that the Colorado State netminder caught a piece of to keep the game scoreless.
Colorado State threatened to break the tie with three minutes remaining in the first half. After Katie Morris cleared the ball out of Fresno State's zone, Jessica Shivers received a stretch pass that led to a one-on-one opportunity with Shivani Battaglia. Battaglia stood strong to the task and made the save with ease to keep the game tied heading into the break.Â
Fresno State's offense came alive in the second half as the Bulldogs began to dictate the pace of play while looking to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Ciara Wilson opened the half with a shot that missed wide left off a corner kick. Minutes later, Kayla Robinson 's turnaround shot from inside the box sailed just over the net as the Bulldogs continued to push offensively.Â
After receiving another corner kick in the 76th minute, the Bulldogs came inches away from breaking the tie as Klara Chapeyrout sent a bicycle kick from the box high towards the net, but the Colorado State goalie leaped and punched the ball away as the game remained tied. The Bulldogs finally broke through with the first goal of the night a minute later. Alexis Campbell sent a corner kick towards the goal that bounced to Laura Mas Serra who headed the ball past the goalie as the Bulldogs led 1-0 with twelve to go in the match.Â
The Rams tested Battaglia three more times in the final ten minutes, but the senior goaltender had an answer for every shot she faced on the night as the Bulldogs held on for their first win at Bulldog Soccer Stadium this season.Â
