FRESNO, Calif. - Trailing 2-0 after thirteen minutes of play, the Fresno State women's soccer team rallied to score three unanswered goals to defeat GCU by a final score of 3-2 at Bulldog Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Grand Canyon struck first seven minutes into the match with a shot from just outside the top of the box that beat Shivani Battaglia for the game's opening goal. The Antelopes doubled their lead six minutes later when Hannah Smith sent a centering pass for Tatum Hofstetter in front of goal that was put past the Fresno State netminder to make it 2-0 GCU lead.
Fresno State was the beneficiary of an own goal by Grand Canyon in the 27th minute to cut the lead to one. The Bulldogs sent an innocent shot that got past the goalie that was eventually pushed into the net by an Antelope defender on a failed clearing attempt. Grand Canyon was able to keep their one goal lead as the two teams headed into the break.Â
After a quiet start by Fresno State in the second half, the Bulldogs broke through with the tying goal in the 70th minute. Abigail Herren sent a pass from the far side of the field to Tiana Beavers inside the box as the senior settled the ball and sent a strike past Emma Knack to bring the game level at two.
Three minutes later, Fresno State completed their comeback thanks to some help by Grand Canyon again. Ciara Wilson sent a pass towards the box that was headed by an Antelope defender right to the foot of Anaya Shelton, as the senior beat the goalie with a shot to the top left corner of the net to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
Fresno State continued to anchor down defensively, holding Grand Canyon to a single shot on goal in the final seventeen minutes of the game. The Antelopes last chance came on a shot in the 81st minute that was blocked by the Bulldogs, as Fresno State went on to earn their second consecutive home win of the season on Sunday in comeback fashion, 3-2.
