Bulldogs fall in pair of Saturday games at Triton Invite

SAN DIEGO - The No. 7 Fresno State water polo team lost both games on Saturday, falling to No. 5 Hawai'i and No. 21 UC Davis on day two of the Triton Invite. Fresno State will face the host school UC San Diego tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. PT.

Junior Hailey Andress led the Bulldogs in scoring in both games, totaling six goals in the two games with three goals each.

Against UC Davis, Kira Anderson had a career-high three goals.

How it happened vs No. 5 Hawai'i
Fresno State got out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, with three goals from Hailey Andress and additional scores from Marit van der Kolk and Brooke Ochoa. Abbey Simshauser scored the only goal for either team in the second quarter as Fresno State took a 6-2 lead into halftime.

Hawai'i opened the third quarter with three goals to cut the deficit and make it a one-goal game. Caitlyn Mossman scored her only goal of the game to give the 'Dogs a bit of a buffer but Hawai'i responded to cut the lead back to one. Kira Anderson scored with 2:20 left in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs an 8-6 lead at the end of the third.

Hawai'i opened the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals, taking a one-goal lead with 1:19 left in regulation. With 55 seconds left in regulation, Brooke Ochoa tied things at nine to force overtime. Hawai'i scored the only goal in the first overtime and Mossman evened the score in the second overtime, but Hawai'i would score the game-winner with 1:57 remaining in the second overtime.

UC Davis scored the first two goals of the game before Andress scored her first of the game with 6:12 left in the first. Andress and van der Kolk scored two more, while UC Davis responded with another before the end of the first. UC Davis led 4-3 after the first eight minutes.

The Bulldogs bookend the second quarters with the first goal by Anderson and the last by Simshauser. The teams were tied 6-6 at halftime.

Anderson scored two more in the third quarter, but the Aggies scored three unanswered. Fresno State drew a penalty and Andress converted, but trailed 10-9 at the end of the third.
