Simshauser nets 100th goal as a Bulldog in GCC opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 7 Fresno State water polo team opened Golden Coast Conference play with a 20-6 win over CUI on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by senior Abbey Simshauser, who scored five goals on Saturday to reach 100 in her Bulldog career. Simshauser has played in 41 games as a Bulldog, joining the program ahead of the 2024 season. She became the fastest player to 100 goals in program history.

Hailey Andress scored four goals, Ella Simone had three, Brooke Ochoa, Elisa Grim and Megan Cranley added two each, and Caitlyn Mossman and Sidney Strickland scored one apiece.

Ida Tully-Giles got the start in the cage, and recorded six saves in the first half. Islay Martin-Hill came in for the third quarter and played 11:44 minutes with three saves. Abigayle Armstrong closed out the game and added one save.

How it happened
Fresno State got out to a 6-0 lead in the first seven minutes of play, scoring goals by five different Bulldogs. Andress scored two in the first quarter as CUI scored its first goal of the game with 34 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Simshauser scored the final two goals of the quarter for the Bulldogs, and helped the team carry a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.

CUI scored the first goal of the second, but was held to nothing after that. The Bulldogs answered with three before the half in credit to two from Simone and one from Mossman.

Fresno State scored five unanswered to open the second half. The Golden Eagles scored their first goal of the third quarter with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. Simshauser scored her fourth of the game on a powerplay chance in the final minute.

The Bulldogs edged CUI in the fourth quarter, 4-3, with goals from four different players. Simshauser scored goal number 100 in the final minute of play, knocking in the final goal of the game with 35 seconds remaining.
