FRESNO, Calif. - In a game that saw seven lead changes and nine ties, the No. 7 Fresno State water polo team dropped an overtime matchup against No. 13 LMU on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center, 11-9. The Bulldogs drop their first Golden Coast Conference game of the season, and move to 9-7 overall (3-1 GCC).
Â
Senior Brooke Ochoa became the program's all-time leading scorer, finishing with a team-high four goals. Needing just two to tie the record, and three to own it, she scored four to bring her career total to 197 goals.
Â
Hailey Andress added three goals on Saturday, and Abbey Simshauser and Elisa Grim each had one.
Â
In the cage, Ida Tully-Giles recorded 11 saves and one steal.
Â
Neither team led by more than one goal for a majority of the game, until the final goal in double overtime.
Â
How it happened
LMU got out to a 3-2 lead in the first quarter. The Lions got a score across first, but Simshauser responded for the Bulldogs. Andress put the Bulldogs on top 2-1 with 2:13 remaining in the opening quarter, but LMU scored two unanswered to close out the quarter.
Â
It was a defensive battle in the second quarter as neither team scored until Elisa Grim lobbed one in at the buzzer to tie the game at three going into halftime.
Â
The offensive efforts picked up out of halftime, with the teams tying 4-4 in the third quarter. Ochoa won the sprint out of the break and immediately scored, but the Lions erased the lead on their next possession. Ochoa scored again on a powerplay opportunity to put Fresno State up 5-4. LMU tied the game again with 6:16 left in third, and took the lead with a goal from the conference's leading scorer Ruth Arino Ruiz shortly after.
Â
Ochoa secured the program record with a behind the back goal at 3:27, tying the game at six. Arino Ruiz netted another in the period, but Andress responded just eight seconds after to tie the game at seven at the end of the third quarter.
Â
It took just over a minute and a half for either team to score in the fourth, but Ochoa ended the drought with her fourth goal of the game with 6:21 on the clock. It took 30 seconds for LMU to tie the game, again. Andress scored her third of the game on a penalty shot with 2:28 left in regulation, putting the Bulldogs up 9-8.
Â
