FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team earned a comeback victory over San Jose State, taking game two in 10 innings, 3-2, at Margie Wright Diamond on Friday night.
The Bulldogs (22-11, 6-2 MW) outhit the Spartans (15-17, 4-4 MW), 8-5. Kealani Nitta had a career night, going 3-for-5 at the plate.
Three pitchers saw action in the circle. Faith Jordan started the game, going 3.0 innings and tying her career-high with four strikeouts. Hannah Ortega came in relief, throwing 3.0 innings and recording three strikeouts. Serayah Neiss closed out the game for the Bulldogs, pitching 4.0 innings to earn the win and improve to 9-3 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SJSU took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. The No. 2 batter drew a one-out walk and was brought home with a double. Jordan dished back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.Â
The Spartans extended their lead in the fourth inning. The leadoff batter drew a walk, and a sacrifice bunt by the next batter was misplayed by the third baseman, allowing the runner to round third and score, giving SJSU a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs looked to respond in the bottom of the frame, when Taryn Irigoyen belted a one-out triple to right field, but she was left stranded as the defense retired the next two batters.
SJSU took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. With their backs against the wall, Fresno State rallied, scoring two runs on three hits to tie the game. Irigoyen drew a leadoff walk, and Emma Martinez followed with a single to left field, putting two runners on base. Olivia Hill came through with a clutch 2-RBI double to tie the game.
Although both teams had opportunities with runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings, neither was able to take advantage.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Kealani Nitta blasted a one-out triple to left field. Kennedy Bunker laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the Spartans attempted to tag Nitta out as she was running to third. It appeared that Nitta avoided the tag by the catcher, but the umpires initially called her out, along with Bunker being thrown out at first. However, after a review, the call was reversed. Nitta was ruled safe at home, and the Bulldogs walked off with the win.
