Andress, Ochoa lead 'Dogs to 24-8 win at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 6 Fresno State water polo team dominated Santa Clara in a 24-8 win on Saturday at the Sullivan Aquatics Center. The Bulldogs improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in Golden Coast Conference play.

Fresno State saw two big showings from veterans Hailey Andress and Brooke Ochoa. Andress scored seven goals, on seven shots, to set a new single game program record. Andress added three assists and one steal in the victory. Ochoa matched her career-best with six goals, and added five assists, to lead the team with 11 points. She also had one drawn exclusion and three steals.

Abbey Simshauser added three goals, Ashley Williams had two, while Alexandra Schow, Caitlyn Mossman, Susanna Martinez, Sidney Strickland, Marley Garwick and Kira Anderson each scored one.

How it happened
The Bulldogs started strong, racking up five goals in the first period, with Andress and Ochoa leading the charge. The Bulldogs took just 15 seconds to score their first goal of the game as Andress hit Ochoa for the score on a powerplay chance. Andress would score a minute later on another powerplay opportunity before Santa Clara got on the board with 6:20 remaining in the first. Andress quickly responded with her second goal of the game, on the assist from Ochoa. Andress would score again off a penalty shot with 5:30 left in the first. Santa Clara scored two more while the Bulldogs added one before the end of the first. The 'Dogs lead 5-3 at the end of the first.

Five goals were scored in the first two and a half minutes of play in the second quarter. Of the five goals, three were by the Bulldogs. The teams were scoreless until Elisa Grim found Andress who ended the drought, and extended the Bulldog lead to four at 9-5. The 'Dogs added three more in the quarter to hold a 12-6 lead going into halftime.

Just 12 seconds into the third quarter, Simshauser scored for the Bulldogs. The momentum carried through the third as Fresno State outscored the Broncos 8-2 in the quarter and led 20-8 at the buzzer. Fresno State kept Santa Clara scoreless in the fourth, behind goalkeeper Abigayle Armstrong. The offensive attack for the 'Dogs tacked on four more goals, completing the 24-8 victory.
