'Dogs falter on the road to Hornets

SACRAMENTO – The Fresno State softball team (24-15, 8-5 MW) fell 3-2 to Sacramento State on Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The Bulldogs outhit the Hornets 8-2 in the contest. Lauren Almeida and Kealani Nitta led the team at the plate with two hits apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was scoreless through three innings. Starting pitcher Key-annah Campbell-Pu'a retired the first nine Sacramento State batters in order.
Fresno State struck first in the fourth inning. Taryn Irigoyen reached base thanks to a throwing error by the shortstop. Madison Rey followed with a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. Emma Martines then hit a sacrifice bunt to right field, scoring the runner from third.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fifth inning. Nitta hit a one-out single, and Kennedy Bunker followed with another single, putting runners on the corners. Almeida extended the streak with an RBI single up the middle, giving Fresno State a 2-0 lead.
Campbell-Pu'a's outing ended after 5.0 innings, only giving up one hit. Serayah Neiss came in relief.
The Hornets drew a leadoff walk, and the next batter moved the runner to second base with a sacrifice bunt. The following batter hit a home run over the left-field wall to tie the game at 2-2. A walk put another runner on base, who then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sacramento State took the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs were sent down in order.

Fresno State will travel to Utah April 11-14, taking on Utah State in a three-game series before visiting BYU for a single game.
