Â
How it Happened
Fresno State scored on its opening drive, taking six plays to go 65 yards before E.J. Warner found freshman Harold Duvall open on the right side for a 25-yard completion and his first career touchdown.
Â
On a Southern third-and-10, Finn Claypool came up with the sack to bring out the punt team. The Bulldogs scored on their next drive, which saw Warner connecting with Jordan Brown for another touchdown pass. The duo put Fresno State up 14-0 with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
Â
After a punt from Nick Verdugo that was downed at the Southern 2-yard line, Fresno State's defense held them there. On third down, Ryan Wilson flew in for a pass breakup to bring out the punt team. Fresno State made quick work to find the end zone for the third time as Warner hit Rayshon Luke to put Fresno State up 21-0 early in the second.
Â
Southern scored its first score of the game with a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs led 21-7 with 5:41 left before halftime.
Â
After an 18-yard kickoff return by Jordan Malau'ulu, Bryson Donelson ran 57 yards for a touchdown on the next play to extend the lead back to 28-7.
Â
Southern worked its way down to the Fresno State 22 yard line, but fumbled and recovered its own ball back at the 27 yard line to bring out the field goal unit. Going for the 44-yard attempt, the Southern kicker saw his attempt blocked by Kyson Van Vugt.
Â
On third-and-5, Luke got away for a 20 yard gain to get the Bulldogs into the red zone. Three plays later, Warner was sacked and fumbled but Jayon Farrar picked up the ball at the Southern 22-yard line. No harm, no foul, however, as Warner hit Richie Anderson III for a 22-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 35-7 at halftime.
Â
Southern received the opening kickoff of the second half, and went three-and-out on their first drive. The Bulldogs took over on the Southern 42 yard line after a 32-yard punt. Fresno State made it down the the four-yard line before fumbling and giving possession to the Jaguars. Despite the turnover, the Bulldog defense forced another three-and-out.
Â
Carson Conklin came in on the following drive, and strung together a successful scoring drive capped by a 19-yard touchdown run by Luke. The Bulldogs led 42-7 midway through the third quarter.
Â
The Bulldogs opened the fourth with another score, this time from Johnathan Arceneaux from three yards out. The Bulldog running backs accounted for 61 yards in the drive that was finished by Arceneaux's first career touchdown. Fresno State's defense forced another three-and-out, finalized by a pass breakup by RL Miller.
