BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State water polo team split the final day of the Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invite on Sunday, falling to No. 3 UCLA 14-6 before defeating No. 16 UC Davis 13-9.
Fresno State moves to 5-3 overall this season after two complete weekends of facing Top 20 opponents.
Game 1 Recap - vs No. 3 UCLA
Fresno State's offense struggled against the Bruins, shooting at a .194 clip (6-of-31). UCLA got out to a 4-0 lead before Charli Munoz scored first for the Bulldogs with 1:38 left in the opening period. UCLA closed out the period with another goal, and an early 5-1 lead.
The second quarter was much closer than the first, seeing the Bruins score only two goals to the Bulldogs' one. Georgia Daly opened up scoring in the period with 5:40 on the clock. UCLA took a 7-2 lead into halftime. The Bruins regained control in the third, and extended their lead to 12-3. Fresno State tallied another goal from Riaan Bryant on a penalty shot with 30 seconds left.
The Bulldogs outscored the Bruins in the fourth, 3-2, with goals from Sidney Strickland, Kira Anderson and Daly.
Daly finished game one with her first multi-score game of the season. In the cage, Katelyn Mobley secured 12 saves.
Game 2 Recap - vs No. 16 UC Davis
UC Davis struck first after winning the opening sprint, but Marit van der Kolk quickly evened the score on the next possession. Hailey Andress and Riaan Bryant added two more goals for the Bulldogs to end the opening quarter, but UC Davis kept it close with a score of their own in the final minute. The Bulldogs led 3-2 after the opening quarter.
The first goal of the second quarter came by penalty shot by Charley Stephens. The Aggies added one on their next possession, but Andress took advantage of a 6-on-5 chance two minutes later to regain the two-goal lead, 5-3. UC Davis put up their own score on a penalty foul, bringing the game back to a one-score bout at halftime, 5-4.
The Bulldogs outscored the Aggies 5-2 in the third quarter to add a buffer. However, UC Davis tied the game at five with a 6-on-5 chance with just under seven minutes on the clock. The Bulldogs didn't take long to regain the lead as Stephens added another on a powerplay offensive opportunity. Katya Aleshina scored a pair back-to-back, putting Fresno State up 8-5 with 3:32 remaining in the third. UC Davis added one more goal but Stephens and Andress added one apiece to close out the quarter with a 10-6 lead.
UC Davis opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals, closing the gap to two goals. Caitlyn Mossman put in a strong effort at center, first drawing the exclusion and later scoring on the powerplay chance. UC Davis scored one more with three minutes left, but Bulldog goals by Bryant and Susanna Martinez in the final two minutes were enough to secure the Bulldog win.
Freshman Katelyn Mobley had a season-high 16 saves against the Aggies.
