Outdoor season begins at Sunbird Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field team gets its outdoor season started this weekend at the Sunbird Invitational, hosted by Fresno Pacific. Competition will feature the men's track and field team as well as a handful of athletes from the women's team. Fresno State has opened its outdoor season at the FPU event each year since 2020.

Taking a look at the outdoor records and where members of the current Bulldogs stand in the program's all-time Top 10, four current members look to better their Top 10 marks.

Liz Tarczy has the program's No. 2 high jump at six-feet, set last season. Tarczy eyes the program record that hasn't been touched since 1987. In the long jump, Janae Heffernan sits at No. 5 with a mark of 6.18m/20-3.5 also set a season ago. Ella Spaulding has the No. 2 score in the heptathlon with 5,551 points at the MW Championships last season.

Talk of the town
Last season, Cierra Jackson became the program's first outdoor national champion as she earned the title in the discus. Jackson broke the NCAA meet record and the Mountain West record with a personal-best mark of 65.82m/215-11 on her first attempt at the championship.

Team finish
The Bulldogs' women team finished T24th at the NCAA Championships last season with 11 points. It was the team's most points at the Championships since 1985, and its highest team finish since1988.

King of the jumps
Fresno State junior Jabari King enters his third season as a Bulldog. He won the long jump at the 2024 Sunbird Invitational as a freshman. It was his first career meet. King is chasing his personal-best mark that he set in that 2024 season with a jump of 7.48m/24-6.5 at the Mountain West Championships. That season, he placed fourth at the championships.

Feb. 17, 1934—Fresno State's Walter Marty, who set a World Outdoor Record of 6-8 5/8 (2.04) in the High Jump in 1933, added the Indoor Record to his resume by going higher (6-8 ¾ [2.05]) at the NYAC Games in Madison Square Garden. Finishing 2nd was George Spitz, who held the previous record of 6-8 ½ (2.04). Marty would win U.S. Indoor and Outdoor titles in 1934.

The Bulldogs' outdoor schedule features a plethora of California meets as the Bulldogs have five meets in the Central Valley.

Home soil
Fresno State will host three meets in the Central Valley this season. The first will be the West Coast Relays on Mar. 27-28. Fresno State will close the regular season with the Fresno State Invitational on May 1-2 before hosting the Mountain West Championships on May 14-16. All home meets will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
