FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team erased an early deficit with a six-run swing in the middle innings and held off a late Pepperdine push to earn a 10-6 victory over the Waves on Saturday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The Diamond 'Dogs improved their early-season momentum behind timely hitting and a key home run that ignited the Red Wave crowd.
How It Happened
Pepperdine struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on a Fresno State error before adding an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. The Waves tacked on another run in the sixth to move ahead 3-0 and put pressure on the Bulldogs' offense.
Fresno State answered immediately in the bottom half of the sixth.
With runners on and momentum building, Michael Boyd ripped a two-run single to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Mikey Pickett delivered with an RBI knock to push the 'Dogs in front, completing a four-run frame and flipping the scoreboard in Fresno State's favor.
The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure in the seventh. After a pair of baserunners reached, Griffen Sotomayor stepped to the plate and launched a three-run home run to right field, extending the lead and energizing the home dugout. Fresno State added another run in the inning to build an 8-3 cushion.
Pepperdine refused to go quietly, responding in the eighth with an RBI double and a two-run homer to trim the margin to 8-6.
The 'Dogs had the final answer.
Fresno State capitalized on a defensive miscue and a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth, plating two insurance runs to stretch the lead back to four. The bullpen shut the door in the ninth to secure the 10-6 win.
