STOCKTON, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team finished day one at the Libby Matson Tournament on Friday, highlighted by the dominant pitching performance of senior Lauryn Carranco who pitched her first career no-hitter against UC San Diego.Â
Carranco pitched seven hitless innings against the Tritons while striking out 12 batters as Fresno State rolled to a 4-0 victory over UC San Diego to open their tournament.
The Bulldogs followed with a comeback victory over Pacific in extra-innings, as Emma Martinez's three RBI's helped the Bulldogs take down the Tigers, 5-4.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Fresno State 4, UC San Diego 0
Lauryn Carranco set the tone for the Bulldogs right from the start, striking out two batters in the first inning. Carranco struck out three more batters in the following two innings, as the righty retired nine of the first ten batters she faced.Â
The Bulldogs started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on the corner and two outs, Alyssa Ramirez sent a ball off the scoreboard in left center to put the 'Dogs in front, 3-0.Â
Lauryn Carranco continued to keep the Triton's bats quiet, striking out the side in the top of the fifth. UC San Diego again failed to solve Carranco in the sixth, as all three batters flew out.Â
With Fresno State holding a 3-0 lead, Jayda Crosby entered the game as a pinch hitter and made an immediate impact. Crosby launched a pitch over the wall in right center, as the freshman secured the first home run of her collegiate career to make it a 4-0 lead for the Bulldogs.Â
Carranco returned in the top of the seventh to face the heart of the order for the Tritons, as all three batters faced the same fate. The senior capped off her career day on the mound by striking out the final three batters, capturing her first career no-hitter that included 12 strikeouts as Fresno State defeated UC San DIego, 4-0.Â
Game 2: Fresno State 5, Pacific 4
The Tigers capitalized on a throwing error by Fresno State in the first to grab hold of the game's first run.Â
Leading off the fourth inning, Jamie Hicks connected with a ball that cleared the fence in left field to bring the Bulldogs even with the Tigers, 1-1. Pacific reclaimed the lead shortly after in the bottom half of the frame, as a single through the right side of the infield made it a 2-1 ballgame.Â
Fresno State responded in the fifth as Emma Martinez laced a single to center field to plate Arianna Aguayo from third as the game was tied 2-2.Â
The Tigers utilized a pair of extra-base hits in the bottom of the fifth to take back the lead before adding an insurance run in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-2.
Down two runs in the seventh, Alyssa Rebolledo singled to the shortstop with one out, bringing Emma Martinez to the plate as the tying run. In a 1-0 count, Martinez hammered a pitch to left field that made it over the wall, tying the game 4-4.Â
Both teams traded chances in extra-innings before Fresno State took the lead in the 10th. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Emma Martinez took advantage of a wild pitch by the Tiger's pitcher and crossed the plate to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game.Â
Alyssa Ramirez shut the door in the bottom of the tenth, as Fresno State beat Pacific in comeback fashion, 5-4.Â
