Bulldogs conclude Fresno State Kickoff Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team wrapped up the Fresno State Kickoff Classic on Saturday with afternoon contests against Idaho State and SIUE.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Fresno State 2, Idaho State 0
Fresno State struck first in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third, Jerzie Liana reached safely on a fielder's choice to bring across the first run of the game. Alyssa Ramirez doubled the Bulldog's lead quickly, reaching safely to first on a fielder's choice that plated Emma Martinez from third to extend the lead to 2-0
Lauryn Carranco picked up right where she left off on the mound after tossing a complete game shutout in her first game in a Bulldog uniform. The senior kept the Bengal's bats quiet, only allowing two hits in seven innings while allowing zero runs and racking up five strikeouts in the process. Fresno State's two runs in the first proved to be enough as the Bulldogs extended their winning streak to start the season, 3-0.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2: SIUE 5, Fresno State 4
After a scoreless three innings to open the game, Emma Martinez slapped a double to right center to give the Bulldogs their first runner in scoring position. Tiara Westbrook jumped on the very next pitch and sent another double to right center, scoring Emma Martinez from second to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
 The Bulldogs added three more in the bottom of the sixth. A sac fly by Jerzie Liana scored Alyssa Rebolledo before Alyssa Ramirez plated another pair of runs for the Bulldogs with a base hit up the middle.Â
Down 4-0 in the top of the seventh, SUIE found their rhythm offensively. With the bases loaded following a pair of walks and a hit batsman, the Cougars utilized three straight singles to help push across five runs to take the lead. Fresno State went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, as SIUE handed Fresno State their first loss of the season.Â

- Carranco has totaled 11 strikeouts in her two appearances on the mound

Fresno State will return to Margie Wright Diamond next week as they host the visiting Washington Huskies for a three game set starting Friday with a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.Â
