'Dogs roll past No. 23 CBU

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 13 Fresno State water polo team kick-started its weekend with a 20-8 win over No. 23 CBU on Friday afternoon at the Aquatics Center. Fresno State moves to 12-9 overall and 3-1 in Golden Coast Conference play.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Kira Anderson and Charley Stephens with four goals each. Anderson had a season-high in scoring while Stephens had her third game of the year with four goals. Hailey Andress, Riaan Bryant, Georgia Daly, and Alice Johnson each added two goals. Charli Munoz, Susanna Martinez, Ashley Williams and Noa Markovsky added one a piece.

The Bulldog defense held the Lancers to a .242 shooting percentage. Fresno State had five field blocks, and Katelyn Mobley recorded five saves in 24 minutes while Islay Martin-Hill had three in the final eight minutes.

How It Happened
The Bulldogs struck first less than a minute into the match when Riaan Bryant found the back of the cage at the 6:56 mark of the opening quarter. Kira Anderson followed 40 seconds later to give Fresno State an early 2-0 lead. After CBU answered twice, the 'Dogs closed the first period with goals from Hailey Andress and Charley Stephens to take a 4-2 advantage into the second.

Fresno State kept control in the second quarter. Georgia Daly opened the frame with a goal at 7:30, and Bryant added another on a penalty shot at 6:42. Even with the Lancers trying to hang around, the Bulldogs continued to answer, getting additional scores from Anderson and Ashley Williams to carry an 8-4 lead into halftime.

The match turned decisively in the third.

Fresno State exploded for eight goals in the quarter, turning a four-goal game into a runaway. Andress started the surge, Anderson added back-to-back scores as part of her hat trick, and Stephens scored three times in the period. Daly and Susanna Martinez also joined the scoring as the Bulldogs overwhelmed CBU and built a commanding 16-5 lead entering the fourth.

The 'Dogs never let up in the final eight minutes. Alice Johnson scored twice in the quarter, while Charli Munoz and Noa Markovsky also added goals as Fresno State reached the 20-goal mark. California Baptist scored three late goals, but the Bulldogs had long since seized control to close out the 20-8 victory.
