BOISE, Idaho - The Fresno State softball team salvaged the final game of their three-game series against the Boise State Broncos at Dona Larsen Park on Sunday. Lauryn Carranco pitched her 11th complete game of the season while striking out nine Broncos as the Bulldogs came out with a 7-1 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State capitalized on a leadoff walk and a hit-by-pitch to start the second inning. With one out, Emma Martinez slapped a double into the gap in left center that brought home Jerzie Liana and Rylee Bocchini as Fresno State built a 2-0 lead. Martinez tacked on the third run of the inning for the Bulldogs after making her way to home plate on a wild pitch.
Boise State got one run back in the third as a solo shot to center field got the Broncos on the board.
The Bulldogs used their power in the fifth to extend their lead over Boise State. Olivia Hill muscled a pitch over the right field wall for an opposite field two-run home run, the first of the season for the sophomore. One batter later, Mallory Vancleave followed suit with an opposite field home run of her own, as Fresno State held a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Fresno State added another run in the seventh when Mallory Vancleave led off the inning with her second home run of the game that made it 7-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Lauryn Carranco kept the Broncos' bats quiet throughout the game, limiting them to just one run on two hits with nine punchouts. In the bottom of the seventh, Carranco struck out two of the last three batters she faced as the 'Dogs took the series finale by a score of 7-1 over Boise State.
