PHOENIX – The Fresno State men's basketball team fell on the road Saturday night, dropping an 85–60 decision to Grand Canyon at Global Credit Union Arena.
With the loss, the Bulldogs moved to 13–18 overall and 7–13 in Mountain West play, while the Lopes improved to 20–11 on the season.
Fresno State was led by Wilson Jacques, who finished with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds. DeShawn Gory added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Jake Heidbreder chipped in seven points and four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State struck first with a jumper from Jacques and held an early 9–5 lead after free throws from Heidbreder. The Bulldogs continued to battle early in the first half, pushing their advantage to 18–15 following a fast-break three-pointer from Aram Soqui Urbano with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Grand Canyon responded with a strong run fueled by its perimeter shooting and transition offense. The Lopes hit several three-pointers and forced turnovers that led to easy baskets, gradually building separation. A late three by Stromer pushed the margin to double digits before halftime, sending Fresno State into the break trailing 44–29.
In the second half, the Bulldogs worked inside to generate offense, getting baskets from Gory and Jacques to cut into the deficit. However, Grand Canyon continued to capitalize on turnovers and second-chance opportunities. The Lopes stretched the lead past 20 midway through the period behind baskets from Moore Jr. and Demirel, and Fresno State was unable to mount a sustained rally the rest of the way.
