Men's Tennis Beats BYU 4-2 in NCAA Tourney

Jay Udwadia recognized the magnitude of the opportunity for his team as an at-large team in the NCAA Tournament.

By winning today's first round match 4-2 over BYU, the Bulldogs secured the program's first NCAA victory since 2003 and earned a second round date with the host and fifth-seeded USC, who swept Marist 4-0 in the afternoon match.

"We're happy to advance to the next round and we hope to keep it going," Udwadia added

After going 18-9 in the regular season and falling in a painfully close championship match to Hawai'i in the WAC Tournament, Udwadia and the Bulldogs remained optimistic for their chance to appear in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004.

The team gathered for the selection show a week ago with the expectation they were among the best in the country and the selection committee rewarded them with a bid to play Mountain West opponent BYU at a neutral site on the USC campus.

"It's nice to face a team we haven't played recently," Fresno State head coach Jay Udwadia said last week. "We're excited to go down to Los Angeles and we'll take things one match at a time."

The 'Dogs took their coaches' advice and took control of the Cougars, by taking the doubles points and winning three singles contests.

The reward of winning is sweet, but each of the Bulldogs can also taste the feeling of ending the reign of the defending champion Trojans. Fresno State will take its best shot on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles. Fans can watch live video and scoring through www.usctrojans.com.
