Dave Ungerer was hired on Feb. 3, 2016 as Fresno State’s new running backs coach and special teams coordinator.
Ungerer arrives to the Valley in the same role he held at Utah State for three seasons under head coach Matt Wells. Ungerer, who’s also had stops at the Big 10, Pac-12 and SEC, in addition to his latest three-year tenure in the Mountain West, brings a total of 29 years of coaching experience and eight bowl games on his resume to the Bulldog football team.
In 2015, Ungerer was one of 34 candidates nominated for the Broyles Award, an award that honors the nation’s top assistant coach. Utah State averaged 25.6 yards on 33 kickoff returns last season, which tied the school record set in 2007. USU also returned 44 punts for 429 yards (9.8 ypr), which tied its 1998 team for the most punt returns in a single season. For the year, USU ranked 10th nationally in kickoff returns and 49th in punt returns a season ago.
Entering the Aggies bowl game last season, Utah State had won every game (12) with a 100-yard rusher under Ungerer’s direction. Utah State suffered a 23-21 loss to Akron in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl despite its leading rusher, Devonte Mays, picking up 124 yards on the ground. The Aggies rushed for 2,146 yards in 2015, marking a 2,000-yard rushing team all three seasons Ungerer was at USU.
Prior to joining Utah State’s staff, Ungerer was the special teams coordinator and running backs coach at Washington State in 2010 and 2011. During his first season at WSU, he improved the Cougars’ kickoff coverage unit from ranking 120th to first nationally.
Prior to Washington State, Ungerer spent the 2009 season at Elon University. As the special teams coordinator, his units ranked among the top 50 in four categories, including fifth in kickoff coverage (17.06 ypr).
From 2007-08, Ungerer served as the special teams coordinator at Oregon State and before that, four seasons at Alabama (2003-06) as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach.
Ungerer’s first stint in the Pac-10 came in 2002 when he spent one season as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at California. That season, its kickoff returner LaShaun Ward ranked third in the nation in average return yards.
Ungerer also spent time at Lehigh (2000-01), Maryland (1992-1996), Holy Cross (1988-91), Davidson (1986-87), Northeastern (1985) and served as a graduate assistant at Rutgers (1983-84).
The Edison, N.J., native is a 1980 graduate of Southern Connecticut State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health.
Ungerer has three sons, Dominic, David and Dante.
