Ryan Stotland is entering his seventh season as the head coach of the Fresno State women's tennis team. He was hired on Aug. 6, 2012 as the eighth head coach in Fresno State history.
Stotland's sixth season (2018) at the helm saw the the Bulldogs win six of their final seven regular season matches to peak at the right time heading into the Mountain West Championships. For the third time in five seasons, Stotland guided Fresno State to the championship match where the 'Dogs claimed their second MW title with a 4-2 win over top-seeded UNLV to earn the the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time since 2014.Â
Fresno State grabbed four All-MW selctions (Singles Team: Emma Wilson, Katerina Stloukalova, Juliane Triebe; Doubles Team: Emma Wilson and Georgia Lawson). It marked the first time since 2010 that the No. 1 seed in the MW tournament did not receive the most singles team selections as UNLV received only two. The feat had happened only four times previously in 18 seasons for the conference. The 'Dogs were just the second team to do this during the last 16 seasons.  Â
In 2017, Fresno State claimed its fourth straight regular-season conference championship with a 3-1 record, earning the No. 2 seed in the MW tournament. Aiding in the Bulldogs'14-9 overall record was All-MW singles team honorees Katerina Stloukalova and Emma Wilson, along with the doubles team of Wilson and Georgia Lawson. Stloukalova was named MW Freshman of the Year, Fresno State's third in its first five seasons in the league.
In his fourth year at Fresno State, Stotland led the Bulldogs to their third consecutive regular-season Mountain West Championship and stretched their regular-season conference win streak to 17. His team finished the season with a 19-9 overall record with its highest ranking coming at No. 20, the program's highest ranking since Jan. 27, 2010. The 'Dogs reached the ranking after qualifying for the ITA Women's Team Indoor Championships for first time since 2008.To qualify, Fresno State defeated No. 34 Arkansas and No. 9 UCLA during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The win over UCLA was the program's fourth over a Top 10 opponent since 2000, and was Stotland's 50th win at Fresno State.
Stotland helped guide sisters Mayar and Rana Sherif Ahmed to the 2016 NCAA Championships. Mayar competed in the singles tournament while the two competed together in the doubles field where they became the fifth Bulldogs pair to earn All-America honors after reaching the quarterfinals. Four of Stotland's student-athletes combined for six postseason conference honors, including Mayar Sherif Ahmed who earned Mountain West Player of the Year.  Â
Following the season, it was announced by the Tennis Recruiting Network that Stotland landed the the No. 24 recruiting class in the country for the 2016-17 season, and was No. 2 among mid-major programs. It was the first-ever ranking for the program in the outlet's Top 25.
Year three saw Stotland guide the 'Dogs to their highest ranking since Feb. 4, 2010, when they reached No. 33 in the ITA rankings. The ranking came amidst a stretch in which Fresno State won 15 of 16 matches, defeating six nationally-ranked opponents along the way. The Bulldogs won a total of 18 matches during the 2015 season, their most in a season since 2009.
Four of Stotland's student-athletes (Sophie Watts, Maiar Sherif Ahmed, Rana Sherif Ahmed, Anneka Watts) accounted for nine Mountain West postseason honors, including Sophie Watts who was named Player of the Year and Maiar Sherif Ahmed who was Freshman of the Year.
Stotland also aided in the continued rise of Sophie Watts who became the 10th Bulldog in program history to earn a berth in the NCAA Division I Singles Championship, and the first since 2009 to reach the second round. In total, Watts accounted for 57 (singles and doubles) wins on the year. Â
In just his second year at the helm of program, Stotland was named Mountain West Coach of the Year by the conference after leading the Bulldogs to the 2014 MW Championship.
After starting 2014 with a 1-7 dual mark, Stotland turned the Bulldogs' year around and guided them to their best finish since 2011. Stotland led Fresno State (16-8) to 12 straight wins in route to their first MW Women's Tennis Championship in program history with a 4-2 victory over New Mexico on April 27.
Earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, Stotland led the Bulldogs to his first NCAA appearance as head coach having won 14 of their last 15 matches since Feb. 15.
Fresno State recorded an undefeated 7-0 home record at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in 2013 under Stotland's leadership and put up a perfect 5-0 record in MW play and garnished several conference accolades along the way.
Under Stotland, sophomores Sophie Watts and Rana Sherif Ahmed were named to the 2014 All-MW Singles Team while Sophie was also named to the and All-MW Doubles Team alongside twin sister and sophomore Anneka Watts. Throughout the season, four different Bulldogs were also awarded MW Player of the Week honors- Anneka, Sophie, Aishwarya Agrawal, and Sofya Malysheva.
Stotland led Fresno State to ITA Top 75 rankings for the majority of the spring, and finished the year with as the No. 71-ranked team in the country. He also led Sophie Watts to a singles ITA ranking all season with the highest of No. 41 on Feb. 11. Agrawal and freshman Claire Yang also began the year with a national doubles ranking of No. 41.
In his first season as a head coach, Stotland guided the Bulldogs to a 14-8 overall record and 6-2 mark in the Mountain West. He led the team to a tie for second place in the conference after the regular season with UNLV.
Stotland's first Fresno State squad entered the spring season ranked No. 60 in the first ITA rankings, climbed as high as No. 52 and finished as the No. 56-ranked team in the country. He also led two doubles teams to national rankings as Aishwarya Agrawal and Olga Kirpicheva ranked No. 46 in the Sept. 7 poll and the duo of Bianca Modoc and Agrawal ranked No. 53 on Feb. 12.
In their first-year in the Mountain West, Stotland's Bulldogs garnered multiple accolades. Under his guidance freshman Rana Sherif Ahmed won the Mountain West Freshman of the Year award, along with being named to the All-Mountain West Singles Team and All-Mountain West Doubles team with senior Melissa McQueen. Throughout the season, Fresno State earned three Mountain West Players of the Week, two by McQueen and one by Ahmed.
Stotland's 'Dogs recorded a 7-1 record at home at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, including a perfect 3-0 record in Mountain West play in Fresno.
Amongst his first wins as a collegiate head coach include the Bulldogs' 4-3 upset win over No. 33 Pepperdine on the road, a nail-biting 4-3 victory over conference foe Wyoming at home and the 4-3 defeat of Boise State to spoil a perfect home season for the Broncos.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Stotland was the assistant coach Arizona for four seasons where he coached five nationally ranked singles players, four nationally ranked doubles teams, posted a 55-37 overall record and made two NCAA Tournament appearances.
At Arizona, Stotland signed the 11th best recruiting class in the country according to tennisrecruiting.net and developed a freshman into the No. 27-ranked player in the ITA rankings. Each year he led the team to a national ranking, including one year when they began the season unranked and were ranked in the top 30 during the season. The Wildcats were ranked as high as No. 24 during Stotland's time at Arizona.
In 2012, Stotland's Wildcats were a perfect 13-0 at home which was the first time in school history the team went undefeated at home. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the year at No. 27 in the ITA rankings. Prior to Arizona, Stotland coached at his alma mater, New Mexico, where he was a graduate assistant and undergraduate assistant from 2005-08. Stotland coached both the men's and women's programs that had winning seasons every year. He also was the Lobo Club Tennis Pro from 2006-08.
During his professional career on the ATP tour from 2005-07, he was ranked in singles and doubles in the world and won five tournaments on tour. He compiled a successful winning percentage and earned ATP singles and doubles points.
Collegiately, Stotland played for the Lobos where he went from being a walk-on to the No. 1 player on the team. He won two conference championships and is the highest ranked player in UNM history at No. 2 in the NCAA in doubles.
The Boise, Idaho native also garnered the accolade of being UNM's only four-time Mountain West All-Academic honoree, MW Scholar Athlete and ITA Scholar Athlete Honoree in school history.
Stotland graduated magna cum laude and earned a bachelor of business administration as a triple major in accounting, marketing and general management from New Mexico.
