Thomas Cornelius serves as the top assistant for football and is responsible for the physical development of the quarterback, offensive and defensive Line position groups. He is also charged with the development and implementation of a comprehensive Sports Performance program for Softball.
Cornelius joined the Fresno State Sports Performance staff as a coaching assistant in October 2020, before being promoted to an full-time assistant role in the spring of 2022. His previous experience at Fresno State also includes overseeing the performance of the Women’s Water Polo (four-time GCC champions) program and assisting with Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Volleyball.
Prior to Fresno, Cornelius worked as a graduate assistant coach at Lindenwood University, where he earned his master’s degree in health sciences with a sport science and performance specialization in 2020. He brought to that role a year of experience with Stanford Sports Performance, where he began as an intern before moving into a temporary assistant role with Football.
Cornelius began his career in his hometown of Ithaca, NY, as a volunteer intern at Cornell University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science nearby at the State University of New York at Cortland, where played football as a starting left tackle and team captain. During his time as an undergraduate, Cornelius interned at EXOS (Phoenix) where he primarily worked with the Combine Preparation and NFL groups.
He holds certifications from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCC0, National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS) and EXOS (Performance Specialist Certification).
