Steve Loop has spent the last six seasons at Fresno State as an assistant coach on the men’s tennis staff. The Fresno native has been an integral piece to the Bulldogs' success in cultivating the culture that Head Coach Luke Shields sought to create.
Despite a tough first season, an upset over top-seeded UNLV at the 2016 the Mountain West Tournament showed what was building in the Central Valley. The Bulldogs followed with an increase of eight wins in 2017, finishing with an 18-13 record (5-2 MW) and once again reached the semifinals of the conference tournament. The 'Dogs added a win to their season total a year later and finished once again finished second in the conference following an undefeated campaign at home (11-0). Fresno State broke past the semis for the first time at the 2018 tournament but fell 4-1 to No. 1 Utah State in the championship match.
After three years of progression in the Mountain West and in the conference tournament, the Bulldogs captured their first MW title in 2019, doing so in front of their fans at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, defeating San Diego State 4-2. With three wins in three days, Fresno State earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2012.
With key pieces returning in 2020, including the reigning MW Player of the Year, the 'Dogs looked toward a repeat season. Two weeks prior to the conference portion of their schedule, the season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Bulldogs returned in 2021 to earn their highest win total since 2012 (20) and their best winning percentage in 25 years (20-4; .833). The 'Dogs finished tied for second in the league standings (5-2) and ranked No. 3 in the ITA Northwest rankings.
Prior to Fresno State Loop was the men’s tennis head coach at Fresno City College (2003-05, 08-13), leading the Rams to seven Northern California Championships and three California State Championships. He was named the Big 8 Coach of the Year nine times and was also named ITA Region 1 Coach of the Year in 2009. He posted a career head coaching record of 170-16 at Fresno City, including three undefeated seasons (2004, 2012, 2013).
Throughout his years of coaching Loop coached seven ITA Regional Singles Champions and seven Regional Doubles Champions. He also coached one ITA Singles National Champion and one ITA Doubles National Champion along with 23 First-Team All-Americans.
Loop served as the assistant head coach Fresno Pacific University during the 2006-07 season. He later took the position as the interim head coach for the last five matches of the 2014 season.
The Fresno, California native graduated from Fresno State with a degree in physical education. He is married to Marisol Loop, his wife of 25 years, and the couple has two children, Stefan and Faith. Stefan is currently a post graduate at USC doctorate program in the Division of Biokinesiology of Physical Therapy and Faith is currently an undergraduate at University of California Santa Barbara.
