Bulldog Men's Tennis has Big Weekend

FRESNO, Calif. - Cheyne wins Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Team Classic
Bulldog Rob Cheyne walks away with the singles championship at the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Team Classic. Cheyne, the 7th-seeded player in the tournament defeated 8th-seeded Matt Hanlin of Washington 4-6, 6-5, ret. that makes him the 3rd straight Fresno State player to win the tournament. In the semifinals earlier, Rob Cheyne defeated Washington's Andy Posavec 6-1, 6-3. David Mullins reached the semifinals in the tournament before falling to Hanlin 7-6, 6-1. "It was a very competitive tournament with top nationally ranked players from eight schools participating throughout the weekend," Fresno State's men's tennis coach Michael Hegarty said. "All of our players (Cheyne, Mullins, and Blake Smittcamp) were facing difficult matches throughout this weekends play and they each stood up to the their challenges with flying colors." Peter Luczak, Olivier Le Jeune, and David Mullins will be squaring off in individual singles competition at the ITA All-American Tournament in Austin Tex. on October 14.

Luczak and Scorteanu Come Up Just Short at the Thunderbirds Invite
Fresno State's Peter Luczak, who was 4-1 in tournament and Andy Scorteanu, who was1-2 in tournament have mixed results in individual singles competition at the Thunderbird's Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Luczak, the No. 1 seeded player in the desert tournament, defeated Robert Collins of Rice 6-1, 6-3 in his Saturday quarterfinals. He turned right around later in the afternoon's semifinals and defeated Auburn's Steve Huss 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, which moved him to the finals Sun. at 10 a.m. Luczak faced off against Oskar Johannsen of Arkansas in the finals and had a one-set lead by winning a tiebreaker in the first set, but Johannsen eventually took the match and the Thunderbird's singles title 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1. "The grueling first set and the hot desert sun had me reeling a bit," Luczak said, "That is when Oskar (Johannsen) took advantage." Scorteanu ended his consolation play Saturday by losing a three-set match to the tournament's No. 5-seeded Toby Hansson of SMU 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. "Andy (Scorteanu) had a extremely tough match-up against Hansson and I'm really proud of both Andy and Peter (Luczak) for the way they played this weekend," Fresno State's men's tennis coach Michael Hegarty said.

Note - Luczak/Scorteanu went 1-1 at the tournament as a doubles team.
