Fresno State Baseball Head Coach Bob Bennett was named the 2000 Lefty Gomez Award winner by the American Baseball Coaches Association. One of the most prestigious awards in baseball, the past recipients have distinguished themselves amongst their peers and has contributed significantly to the game locally, nationally and internationally.
Bennett enters his 32nd season as the leader of the ?Dogs this spring. Named the head coach following the retirement of fellow Hall of Fame coach Pete Beiden, Bennett ranks No. 10 on the all-time victories list and looks to become only the eighth coach to ever reach the 1,200-win plateau.
The nation?s fifth-winningest active coach, Bennett has recorded 27 winning campaigns ? including the current streak of 21. The ?Dog skipper has claimed 15 conference championships, 19 postseason births and two College World Series appearances. Twenty-six All-Americans and eight first-round picks have roamed his dugout as well.
Past recipients of the Lefty Gomez award include BYU?s Glen Tuckett, Stanford?s Mark Marquess and Major League Baseball?s Peter Ueberroth.
