Dallas, Tex. - Trying to upset a top-25 team once is tough enough. But trying to beat the same top-25 team twice in one season is almost impossible. The Fresno State women's soccer team downed the Southern Methodist Mustangs 3-1 in the regular season en route to its first regular season title, but fell prey in a double-overtime match for the Western Athletic Championship 1-0.
Nicole Lamb found the back of the Bulldog net in the game's 117th minute to claim the WAC crown. Lamb received a cross from Tara Comfort at the top of the box from the left side and fired a shot to the right beating 'Dog keeper Jennifer Johnstone. Johnstone had recorded a season-high 10 saves before giving up the game winner.
During regulation the two squads fought mostly between the boxes with each team finding opportunities to threaten. Both Johnstone and SMU keeper Becca Lief repelled the attacks to keep the score level at zero entering overtime.
SMU's Sarah Harvey went to work in the first overtime firing all four Mustang shots during the period. Three of the four were within 10 yards, but Johnstone used her tremendous experience and goal-saving savvy to repel each one of Harvey's advances.
The Bulldogs were led offensively by Jill Pearson and Morgan Oliveira who combined to fire six shots on goal off of nice combination plays. Aimee Thompson and Sara Yudin also contributed to the attack with two shots a piece.
Reyna Green, Jill Pearson and Aimee Thompson were named to the All-WAC tournament team while Lamb took home MVP honors.
