SAN DIEGO - The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first and second innings as they cruised to an 11-2 victory over San Diego State. The victory by Fresno State gives it seven wins in a row and improves the Diamond 'Dogs record to 26-25, 8-11 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Fresno State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as it put up three runs in the top of the first. With one out, second baseman Tom Creighton singled, then moved up to third on a single by leftfielder Anthony Acevedo. Both runners scored on Nick Garcia's single to right field that hopped past the Aztec right fielder and allowed Garcia to advance to third. The Bulldogs' third baseman scored on the next play when first baseman Brandon Gemoll grounded out to first.
The Diamond 'Dogs added three more runs in the second to pad the lead for starting pitcher Tom Graham (7-5). Centerfielder Tony Guzman started the inning off with a walk and moved up to second on a single my catcher Brad Harper. Shortstop Oscar Lopez followed Harper with a sacrifice bunt which Aztec third baseman John Pashales threw away, scoring Guzman and allowing Lopez to advance to second.
After a fly out by rightfielder Joe Gerber, Creighton grounded to the shortstop who cut down Harper at the plate. A walk to Acevedo loaded the bases for Garcia who connected with a single to score two runs. Garcia went 5-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Six runs would have been plenty for Graham who had the Aztecs' number all night. The right-hander only gave up two runs, both in the fourth, on his way to his fifth complete game. Graham struck out six batters while only walking four.
After San Diego State got its two runs in the fourth the Bulldogs answered with two in the sixth and seventh, then tacked on another run in the eighth.
The two teams will be back in action Saturday night at 7 p.m.
