Fresno, Calif. - With their backs to the wall the Bulldogs came out swinging and produced a 6-3 victory over UNLV. The victory keeps alive Fresno State's hopes of making next week's Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The victory ups Fresno State's record to 33-29 overall and 14-15 in the WAC. To get into the tournament, the Bulldogs need to win tomorrow and either New Mexico or Hawai'i has to win the last two games of the series in Hawai'i.
Fresno State struck first by getting two runs in the top of the first. Rightfielder Joe Gerber led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, then scored two batters later on a double by leftfielder Anthony Acevedo. Acevedo would score the second run of the inning on a single by first baseman Nick Garcia.
The Bulldogs gave starter Casey Rowe all the runs he would need in the fourth as Nick Garcia blasted a two-run home run to put the Bulldogs up 4-0. The Rebels would pull to within two by getting two runs in the fourth, but the Bulldogs would add a run in the bottom of the inning when Oscar Lopez scored on a ground ball by Gerber.
Gerber scored his second run of the game in the seventh as Fresno State added an insurance run on a single by Acevedo. UNLV got a run in the ninth, but reliever Hans Smith closed out the ninth for his seventh save of the year.
Fresno State and UNLV will meet in the final game of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Beiden Field. Next week Beiden will be the site of the 1999 WAC Tournament, May 19-22.
