Fresno, Calif. - A two-run triple by designated hitter Jeff Prieto opened up a one-run game and pushed the Bulldogs to a 7-2 victory over BYU. Fresno State has won four straight games and seven of its last eight games in the Western Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs are 30-26 on the season and 11-12 in the WAC.
The Bulldogs got on the board early as they picked up one run in the first off BYU starter Jordan Opdahl. Leftfielder Anthony Acevedo got things going with two out when he reached first on a catcher's interference call. Following a walk to first baseman Nick Garcia, Acevedo scored on a single by Prieto.
Fresno Stated padded starting pitcher Casey Rowe's lead in the second by scoring two more runs. Centerfielder Tony Guzman started the inning off with a walk, then scored on a double by third baseman Jason Fanconi, who moved up to third on the throw home. The Diamond 'Dogs second run of the inning came when Fanconi scored on a single by the next batter, shortstop Oscar Lopez.
After tying the game in the second, the Cougars pulled to within a run as they scored once in the top of the third. The closest BYU came to scoring again was in the sixth when it had runners at the corners, but Rowe struck out one batter and got the last batter of the inning to pop out.
Prieto broke things open in the seventh with his shot to right field. With rightfielder Joe Gerber on second and Acevedo on first, Prieto's ball went to the gap in right center, scoring both runners. As the junior went to third, the second baseman's throw went into the Fresno State dugout, scoring Prieto.
The Diamond 'Dogs would add an insurance run in the eighth and Hans Smith worked the last 2.1 innings for his sixth save of the year.
The Bulldogs and the Cougars will finish out the three-game set tomorrow at Beiden Field, starting at 1 p.m.
