FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State golf team has qualified for the 1999 NCAA West Regional to be held May 20-22 at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort in Tucson, Ariz. The Bulldogs are the third seed in District VII and are one of 18 teams participating in the regional.
"This is what we have worked for all year, to make this tournament," Fresno State head coach Mike Watney said.
The tournament format consists of 54 holes with 18 holes of play each day. The top nine teams and two individuals will qualify for the NCAA Championships, June 2-5, at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
"I am glad we have this week off to prepare because we were really fatigued coming back from the WAC Tournament," Watney said. "Well be ready when it comes time to play."
This is the 11th consecutive year the Dogs have qualified for the West regional. Last year the team finished eighth at the tournament and went on to the NCAA Championships where they finished 22nd.
In addition to Fresno State, New Mexico, BYU, San Diego State, Colorado State, UTEP, Tulsa, SMU, TCU and UNLV also qualified for regional play.
