San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Fresno State used three runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead of Mustangs, then shut the door on them with five runs in the eighth as the defeated Cal Poly, 8-1, in San Luis Obispo. The Bulldogs record increases to 21-25.
The Mustangs got on the board first as they scored a run in the bottom of the second of starter Zach Minor, but it would be the only run they would score as Minor went 7.2 innings for his second victory of the year.
Fresno State got all the runs Minor would need in the top of the fourth. Leftfielder Anthony Acevedo increased his hitting streak to 10 games as he singled to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a single by Nick Garcia. A wild pitch by Cal Poly's Josh Morton scored Acevedo and moved Garcia to second.
Two batters later designated hitter Michael Bowlin reached on an error and Garcia advanced to third. Centerfielder Tony Guzman was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Third baseman Max Drake then delivered a single that score two runs.
Any Cal Poly hopes of mounting a comeback were dashed in the eighth innings the Bulldogs scored five runs with the help of two walks, two hits and three hit batters. Bowlin was hit twice in the inning.
Fresno State will be back in action on Friday as it starts a three-game series with San Jose State. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m.
