Bulldogs Wrap Up Day One of Cal/Nevada Championships

Fresno, Calif.- Twenty-five Fresno State competitors have qualified for the final round of their events at the Cal/Nevada Championships taking place in San Diego this weekend. Tomorrows field events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the track events scheduled to start at noon.
Leading the way for the women was Angela Daigle who qualified for the finals in the 100 (11.67) and 200 (23.85). Tamikio Simpson will compete in the 400 finals after running a season best of 55.94. Jynette Grayson, who ran a 56.44, will join her. The 4x100-relay team of Daigle, Reyna Hill, Dwanice Williams, and Simpson made the finals with the fourth-fastest time of the day at 46.62.
In the only final of the day, Jennifer Smith finished ninth in the 3000 with a time of 10:11.21. Laura Bracht was 21st in a time of 10:39.74.
In the field events, Melissa Price tied for first in the pole vault with a jump of 12-2 and will compete tomorrow. Despite jumping a PR of 11-8, junior Aleyna Tomate did not qualify for the finals. Sarah Goodlaw will compete tomorrow in the shot put and hammer after a throw of 44-11 1/2 in the put and 171-5 in the hammer. Brooke Aderman also qualified for the hammer finals with a throw of 163-5, tying her personal best. Freshman Kayla Russum had the top throw of the day in the javelin with a PR of 143-0, the best throw by a Bulldog this year.
For the men, E.J. Jackson ran away from the competition in the 100, turning in the best time of the day at 10.49. Daunte Burks (10.74) and Tierre Sams(10.56-PR) will also compete in tomorrows 100 final. Mike Ward is the top qualifier in the 200 with a time of 21.04. Jackson also qualified for Sundays 200 final with a time of 21.32.
Two Dogs will run in tomorrows 800 final as Gabe Orosco ran the top time of the day at 1:53.09, and Armando Negrete won his heat with a hand time of 1:53.5. Ron Murray made the 400-meter hurdles finals with a time of 53.39. The Dogs 4x100 relay team of Jackson, Sams, Ward and Burks were the top qualifiers with a season-best time of 40.08. The 4x400-relay team will also compete tomorrow after turning in a time of 3:19.20.
With the only mens final of the day coming in the 3000 steeplechase, Tim Padilla came in fourth in a time of 9:16.14. He was followed by Philip Ogilvie (12th-9:28.44) and Dustin Marzolf (27th-10:14.02).
In the field, Jim Davis and Scott Wenholz are tied for first in the pole vault after clearing 16-4 3/4. Nick Paramo also made the finals after clearing the same height. Jumper Duran Archie made the finals in the long jump (23-10) and triple jump (48-6 1/4), as did Brandon Taylor (22-8; 44-8). Mike Askjaer also made the long jump finals with the second longest jump of the day at 23-2 1/2.
In throwing events, Luke Woydziak will compete in the hammer finals after he turned in the top throw of the day at 209-11. Darrel Higgins qualified in the javelin at 182-4.
