WAC Championships This Week In Texas
The Bulldogs will travel to El Paso, Texas, for this year's outdoor WAC Championships. The team is strong in the sprinting events, but so are many other schools. In the WAC, senior sprinter E.J. Jackson (Modesto Calif.) currently ranks fifth in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200 meters. Junior C.J. Nakayama (Clovis, Calif.) has a season-best 47.27 in the 400 meters which ranks fourth in the conference. Sophomore Gabe Orosco (Tipton, Calif.) is second in the WAC in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:51.82. Sophomore Philip Ogilvie (Clarksburg, Calif.) and freshman Josh Roddy (Manteca, Calif.) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500 meters. Senior Tim Padilla (Coarsegold, Calif.) is the team's top steeplechase runner and freshman Robert Vaca (Parlier, Calif.) will run the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The team will be a top competitor in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays and the Bulldog pole vaulters are the best in the WAC. Freshman Kyle Carano (Fresno, Calif.) will be the team's top participant in the triple jump and sophomore Duran Archie (Fresno, Calif.) and senior Brandon Taylor (Concord, Calif.) will challenge in the long jump. Juniors Ryan Beckenhauer (Reedley, Calif.) and Mike Guidry (Fresno, Calif.) will compete in the shot put and discus. Senior Shylo Eaton (Stockton, Calif.) and junior Chris Uribe (Granite Bay, Calif.) will challenge in the hammer and javelin, respectively. Senior Scott Wenholz (Gilroy, Calif.), junior Donnell Wickett (Ventura, Calif.) and sophomore Justin Schwartz (Lodi, Calif.) will compete in the WAC decathlon.
Davis Qualifies For Nationals
Senior Jim Davis (Godley, Texas) took first in the pole vault at the Modesto Relays, clearing an automatic qualifying mark and personal-best 18-2 1/2. Davis' previous PR was 17-11, a mark he achieved at last year's WAC Championships. Davis had cleared a season-best 17-6 1/2 earlier this year at Cal State Northridge before capturing the title at Modesto. He now tied for third on Fresno State's all-time pole vault list with Mark Heppner, who cleared 18-2 1/2 in 1986. Davis looks to defend his outdoor title at this weekend's WAC Championships.
Bulldogs Continue To Improve At Modesto Relays
In addition to Davis' stellar performance, many other Bulldogs had solid showings at the Modesto Relays. Jackson posted a personal-best time of 10.29 as he took third in the 100 meters. Freshman Darnell Hammock (Oakland, Calif.) improved his 200 time with a mark of 21.82. Roddy ran a personal-best 3:53.12 in the 1,500 meters and Uribe earned a PR in the shot put with a mark of 46-7.
Cal/Nevada Recap
The Bulldogs displayed fine performances at the annual Cal/Nevada Championships two weeks ago as they topped Cal 87-85 for the title. Jackson won the 100 and 200 meters and was part of the victorious 4x100 relay team. Kyle Carano took second in the triple jump with a season-best mark 49-3 3/4. Nakayama finished fifth in the 400 meters (48.09) and fourth in the long jump (23-6 1/4). Padilla ran a season best 9:17.97 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase resulting in a fifth place finish. Sophomore Tierre Sams (Fresno, Calif.) finished third in the 100 meters and Hammock took fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.89. Also, Uribe took seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 198-3.
