Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State's defensive unit showed its experience, downing the offensive unit 25-10 at San Joaquin Valley Growers Field today as the Bulldogs held their spring scrimmage this morning. Third-year Bulldog head coach Pat Hill used six series of situational play, kicking game situations and special teams before five "compete zone" drives from the 25-yard line.
The offense could score points on touchdowns, field goals and extra points. The defense could score seven points in stopping the offensive drive, blocking a field goal or if the offense missed the field goal. The defense could also earned four points if it held the offense to a field goal.
With only one scholarship wide receiver and only two scholarship running backs playing in todays scrimmage, veteran quarterback Billy Volek was 2-2 for 10 yards in compete zone play. Sophomore quarterback David Carr, who is redshirting the 1999 season, went 5-6 in compete zone for 24 yards and a touchdown pass to tight end Billy Jack Pierce.
It was freshman quarterback Jeff Grady, however, who hooked up with true freshman wide receiver Jerry Bolling for a pretty 75-yard catch for a score. It was the first and only play of the third series prior to compete zone.
The Bulldog defense took a 21-0 lead, taking advantage of two missed field goals (32 and 45) and then holding sophomore Drew Johns and the offense without a score. Jeff Hanna kicked a 39-yard field goal to add three points to the offenses score and four to the defensive score.
During the situational series, sophomore Carlos Mack picked off a pass, one of the highlights of the morning. Freshman defenseive lineman Ramsey Venner had eight tackles overall, including two sacks and one tackle for loss for three yards. Tim Skipper had six tackles during the workout, including two for loss for a total of seven yards.
