Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State left-handed pitcher Hans Smith (Central Point, Ore.) became the second Bulldog baseball player taken in the 1999 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when he was selected in the 30th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Before Smith was taken by Arizona, infielder Sam Lopez (Dinuba), a member of Fresno States 1999 recruiting class, was chosen by the New York Mets. Lopez spent last season at Fresno City College.
No pitcher in the Western Athletic Conference made more trips to the mound this year than Smith, who led the conference with 38 appearances. In 72.1 innings of work, the 6-9 Smith had a team-low 4.48 earned run average with a 5-5 record.
As one of the top shortstops in the state, Lopez hit .399 for the Rams in 46 games with 23 doubles, nine home runs and 60 RBI.
During the first day of the draft, Bulldog right-handed pitcher Casey Rowe (Fresno) was selected in the ninth round and Dan Parker (Alamo), a recruit from Diablo Valley J.C., was chosen in the 16th round.
