Cheyne a Surprise at Rolex Regional, Earns Automatic Bid
Junior Rob Cheyne (Wellington, New Zealand) was the surprise player of the Rolex Regional Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. on Oct. 28-Nov. 1. Cheyne entered the tournament unseeded but advanced to the singles finals before falling to top-seed Alex Waske of San Diego State, 6-3, 7-5. By reaching the singles final, Cheyne has earned an automatic bid into the National Individual Indoors in Dallas, Texas on February 4-8, 1999.
Dogs Hope for Indoor Bid After Successful Regional
Fresno State was the only team at the Rolex Regional to advance three players, Cheyne, Olivier Le Jeune (Porspoder, France) and Peter Luczak (Melbourne, Australia), into the singles quarterfinals. The Bulldogs are the front-runners to receive the regional bid into the National Team indoors in Seattle, Wash., February 15-18, 1999.
