Fresno, Calif. - After day two of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament only four teams remain as New Mexico and UNLV were eliminated today. Hawaii started off the day by defeating New Mexico 7-6. In the second game Rice downed UNLV 9-6 and San Jose State finished off the game by defeating TCU 14-3.
New Mexico got off to an early start against Hawaii as the Lobos jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Rainbows got on the board. Hawaii picked six runs in the fifth as they took the lead for the first time. The Rainbows added a run in the sixth, then held on for the victory as the Lobos scored two runs in ninth to pull within one run.
Catcher Ken Wakakuwa led the way for the Rainbows with two hits and designated hitter Scooter Martines had two RBI. Each one of the New Mexico starters picked up a hit with catcher Steve Elzy collecting a game-high three rips.
In the second game Rice got three runs early off UNLV starter Ryan Olsen. The Rebels tied the game in the third then pulled ahead with three more runs in the sixth. The Owls came back with two runs in the eighth and won the game with a three spot in the ninth.
The Owls come back was lead by first baseman Jacob Baker who went 2-4 with two RBI. Rightfielder Will Ford went 2-3 with two runs. The Rebels had five batters picked up at least two hits, including centerfielder Ryan Ludwick who was 3-5 with two runs scored.
In the final game of the game of the day San Jose State started off with a run in the second then built up its lead as the game went on. The Spartans scored 12 runs in the final four innings on their way to the 14-3 victory. San Jose State blasted four home runs with two coming off the bat of catcher Mike Wright. Brandon Macchi had a big day for the Spartans, going 4-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Tomorrow Rice and San Jose State meet in the first game at 11 a.m. The 3 p.m. game pits Hawaii against TCU. The winner of that Hawaii-TCU game will meet the loser of the Rice-San Jose State game at 7 p.m.
