Bulldogs Lose Tough One to Long Beach State, End Regular Season with a 1-0 Win over Cal Poly
Homecoming was sweet for former Bulldog assistant Julie Cochran as her 49ers outlasted the Bulldogs, 2-1 Thursday night at Bulldog Stadium. The 'Dogs got out to an early lead on a goal by senior Cheryl Gano (Richland, Washington/Hanford HS) and the score remained 1-0 until late in the second half. At 82:46, former Bulldog Jennifer Reott danced around defenders to put the ball in and tie things up. It looked like the Bulldogs were heading for their seventh overtime game of the season when Bulldog goalkeeper Jennifer Johnstone was flagged for holding Long Beach State's Dana Crutchfield and Crutchfield was awarded a penalty kick. Crutchfield made that kick at 86:55 to make the final score 2-1.
The game against the Mustangs was a defensive battle as neither team showed much offensive power during the first half. The Bulldogs finally got things going in the second half with a goal by Morgan Oliveira (Lemoore, Calif./Lemoore HS). Oliveira put a shot in the left corner of the net off a pass by sophomore Jill Pearson (Garden Grove, Calif./El Modena HS). Goalkeeper Jennifer Johnstone earned her fourth solo shutout of the season.

1998 'Dogs had Freshman Feel
If it took a few games to recognize all those new faces on the field, it was probably because five of the 11 starters this season were freshman. Midfielder Aimee Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif./La Reina HS), midfielder Andrea Morelock (Fresno, Calif./Hoover HS), forward Reyna Green (Modesto, Calif./Modesto HS), defender Susan Shivokevich (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS), and midfielder Morgan Oliveira (Lemoore, Calif./Lemoore HS) were all in their first season with the Bulldogs. And each made quite an impact. Thompson was second on the team lead in scoring with 10 points (4g, 2a) and led the team in goals. Green was tied for fourth in scoring, and Shivokevich was a driving force behind the Bulldog defense. Both Oliveira and Morelock made offensive contributions, with eight and five points respectively.
Three Seniors Close Out their Bulldog Careers
Forward Cheryl Gano, midfielder Amber Jacobsen and defender Betsy Juergens played their last home game as Bulldogs this past Sunday against Cal Poly. Gano finishes her four-year career as the only person to have played in every match in Bulldog women's soccer history. She currently is the program's all-time leader in scoring (66), goals (28) and assists (10). Gano was a second-team all-WAC selection as a sophomore and junior. Although she missed the 1997 and 1998 seasons due to injury, Amber Jacobsen spent two years in the Bulldog line-up and had quite an impact. In 1996 she was the only person to start all 21 matches and started 13 of 21 matches in 1995. Defender Betsy Juergens also missed the 1998 season due to injury. In 1997 she played in all 21 matches and started at sweeper due to injuries in the lineup. As a sophomore she played in 20 matches.
