Bulldogs Defeat Utah, Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime to BYU
The Bulldogs got on the board early and managed to keep Utah at bay as they earned a 2-0 victory over the Utes last Thursday. Senior forward Cheryl Gano scored off an assist by freshman Andrea Morelock at 1:43 in the match to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Johnstone and the rest of the 'Dogs managed to keep the Utes scoreless as freshman Aimee Thompson scored an insurance goal with 20 seconds remaining in the match to seal the 2-0 victory.
Against BYU the 'Dogs were able to keep the high-powered Cougars in check during regulation time. Johnstone had eight saves in the match, including two key punch-outs that kept BYU from scoring. The game remained in a 0-0 deadlock until Cougar forward Shauna Rohbock scored two minutes into the overtime period. The loss dropped Fresno State's record to 6-7-3 and 2-2-1 in the WAC.
About the Hornets
The 7-7 Cal State Sacramento Hornets are coached by Sandra Asimos (41-65-5) and Ron Cervellin. Leading the way in scoring for the Hornets is junior Jessica Mackiewicz with 21 points (9g, 3a). Junior goalkeeper Kristy Milanese has 70 saves and three shutouts and ranks second in the Big Sky Conference with a 1.286 GAA. The Hornets are currently 0-3 in conference matches and are seventh in defense in conference matches with a 2.50 GAA.
About the Rainbows
After a quick 6-0 start, the Rainbow Wahine have dropped six of their last eight matches, including conference matches against Utah and BYU. The Rainbows are coached by Pinsoom Tenzing (5th season, 26-49-5) and assistants Kathy Carey and Andie Masanda. Their 8-6 record is a new mark for all-time season win total for the program. Their previous high was seven wins in 1997.
Bulldog Notes
Freshman Aimee Thompson (4g, 1a) and sophomore Jill Pearson (3g, 3a) are
tied for the team lead in scoring with nine points Sunday's match at
Hawaii will be the last WAC match for senior Cheryl Gano. Gano has
played in every match in Bulldog women's soccer history this year's
WAC tournament will take place in Provo, Utah on November 4-7. The top
four teams from the Pacific and Mountain divisions will advance

Geni Badella, So., Goalkeeper: has seen game action against William and Mary and UC Santa Barbara combined with Jennifer Johnstone on a shutout against UC Santa Barbara was a standout at Hoover HS.
Kristin Dunlap, Jr., Midfielder/Defender: has started all 16 matches scored a goal in Bulldogs' loss at William and Mary appeared in every match in 1997.
Cheryl Gano, Sr., Forward: scored the game-winning goal against Utah on 10/15 scored her first goal of the season against San Diego and earned an assist against William and Mary has started all 16 matches and taken 18 shots is the Bulldogs' career leader in points (64), goals (27) and assists (10) ... has played in every match in the program's three-year history.
Jaime Gooch, Fr., Midfielder: played in nine matches scored her first collegiate goal against William and Mary four-year letterwinner in soccer at Clovis West High School ... first team all-conference her senior year.
Reyna Green, Fr., Forward: named WAC Player of the Week in the Pacific Division for the week of 10/5 had the game-winning goal in overtime against Idaho State scored her first collegiate goal against San Jose State one of the top newcomers on the team has started 16 matches taken 22 shots.
Jennifer Johnstone, Jr., Goalkeeper: has started all 16 matches in 1998 ... has 71 saves on the season has three solo shutouts and one shared shutout played every minute in the goal in 1997 and recorded 6 shutouts ... named first team all-WAC and second team All-West Region.
Megan McAlpin, Jr., Defender/Midfielder: started 15 matches had an assist in the Bulldogs' 2-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield taken 16 shots on the season played in 20 matches, despite injuries, in 1997.
Sarah McEachen, Jr., Forward/Defender: started 15 matches taken three shots this season started every match in 1997.
Andrea Morelock, Fr., Midfielder: scored two goals this season has started all 16 matches and scored her first collegiate goal against Cal State Bakersfield taken 12 shots this season.
Morgan Oliveira, Fr., Midfielder: has started all 16 matches has two goals and two assists this season scored her first collegiate goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-2 tie at USC taken 18 shots ... brother, Tom, is a volunteer assistant with the Bulldogs.
Jill Pearson, So., Forward: tied for the team lead in scoring with nine points (3 goals, 3 assists) scored her first goal of the season against UC Santa Barbara started 15 matches and has taken a team-leading 37 shots had an assist on the game-winning goal against Cal State Bakersfield named WAC Pacific Division Freshman of the Year, first team all-WAC and second team All-West Region in 1997.
Jessica Peisch, Fr., Midfielder: has played in 12 games this season lettered in soccer at Clovis West High School ... team captain her senior year ... team offensive MVP.
Susan Shivokevich, Fr., Defender: has started all 16 matches taken five shots scored her first collegiate goal against San Diego played at Thousand Oaks High School in Thousand Oaks, Calif. ... named first team all- league, region and county her senior year ... league MVP in 1997.
Renea Tanner, Fr., Forward: has played in all 16 matches scored the game-winning goal against Cal State Bakersfield letterwinner at Clovis High School ... first team all-conference ... holds the school record with 21 goals in a single season.
Melinda Tejeda, So., Forward: saw her first action as a Bulldog against UC Santa Barbara transferred from Fresno City College where she was the Central Valley Conference MVP.
Aimee Thompson, Fr., Midfielder: Tied for the team lead in scoring with nine points (4 goals, 1 assist) scored her first collegiate goal against UC Santa Barbara on 9/16 has started 15 matches this season has taken 23 shots lettered in soccer, softball and volleyball at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, Calif. ... all-CIF selection ... scored 8 goals in a game in high school.
