FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Olivier Le Jeune won two matches and advanced to the round of 16 at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships at Pikesville, Md.
Le Jeune started the day by winning a three-set marathon against qualifer Andres Pedroso of Duke 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4. Later in the afternoon, Le Jeune put his clay court magic back to work in defeating Mississippi's Martin Selin in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
"Ollie had a great day on the clay," Fresno State head coach Michael Hegarty said. "He was battling through some early physical pain in his first match, but he managed to bring his best stuff to the second round."
Peter Luczak, currently ranked No. 19 in the nation, did not fare as well. He lost a close match to Kentucky's Carlos Drada 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Luczak dropped to the consolation bracket where he faced Daniel Iniesta of Arkansas-Little Rock. Iniesta trailed Luczak 5-2 in the first set when he decided to retire.
"Peter was very disappointed with his match against Drada, but he learned a lot," Hegarty said. "His consolation bracket is full of opportunities for big wins that can make a difference come NCAA selection time."
Both Le Jeune and Luczak have 10 a.m. EDT matches tomorrow. Le Jeune plays his round of 16 match against the tournament's No. 1 seed, Ryan Sachire of Notre Dame. Luczak goes up against Tennessee's Adam Carey in the consolation round of 16.
